Working in a signature process of painting in reverse on acrylic sheets, scraping off the resulting "skins" of oil paint, and collaging them onto canvas, Puerto Rican artist Angel Otero has intertwined the act of painting with the act of remembering. This book focuses on his recent work-a turn to figuration that builds on the formal experimentation of his early abstract painting-documenting exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth in 2022, 2023, and 2024 alongside contemporaneous works and culminating in his 2026 exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Essays by curators John Tain and Tobias Ostrander consider Otero's relationship with the past- whether art historical or personal-and a conversation between Otero and curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm captures the artist's approach in his own words.

About the Author
Tobias Ostrander is an independent curator based in Mexico City. He served as Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs at the Pérez Art Museum Miami from 2011 to 2019.
John Tain is Director of Curatorial Affairs, Carnegie Museum of Art.
Julie Rodrigues Widholm is the director of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) at UC Berkeley.
