No photographer had a more serious and deeply felt response to the political and cultural impact of the 1960s and early 1970s than Richard Avedon, whose iconic portraits of key figures of the era influenced the course of photography in the decades that followed. About the Authors
Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. Renowned for both fashion photography and portraiture, he transformed the visual language of the medium through his distinctive style and psychological insight. His portraits of artists, writers, musicians, political figures, and cultural leaders form an enduring record of modern life, while his books and exhibitions helped establish new standards for photographic publishing. As a staff photographer for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and The New Yorker, Avedon shaped generations of photographers and remains a defining figure in the history of photography. Contributors to this volume include photographic historian and curator Mary Panzer; independent curator Bob Rubin; photography curator Paul Roth; Pulitzer Prize-winning author and critic Louis Menand; and journalist and author William Shawcross.
