A timely exploration of the ways anti-colonial resistance has been represented in art around the world.
The works of over 40 contemporary artists from the Global South and the diaspora tell stories of rebellion and war, violence and trauma as well as survival and resilience. Their stories are complemented by historical documents and numerous objects from the RJM collection, silent witnesses of moments of anti-colonial resistance.
Nanette Snoep has been director of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum Kulturen der Welt in Cologne since 2019, where she implements a decolonial strategy. From 2004 to 2014, Nanette Snoep held a chair at the École du Louvre in Paris and at the Université Paris Nanterre on African art history. Before her appointment to Germany in 2015, Snoep worked for 16 years at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris as head of the historical collection. In France, she curated many exhibitions including 1931: Les étrangers au temps de l'Exposition colonial (Cité Nationale de l'Histoire de l'Immigration, Paris, 2008), Vodou: L'Art de Voir l'Invisible (Musée du Vodou, Strasbourg, 2013), and for the Musée du quai Branly Recettes des Dieux: L'Invention du Fétiche (2009).
