Featuring approximately 40 artists and artist groups, the first Asia Society Triennial reflects the diversity of contemporary art from Asia and the diaspora
Launched in the fall of 2020 by Asia Society, the Triennial is a festival of art, ideas, and innovation. The first initiative of its kind in the United States, the Asia Society Triennial is an ambitious recurring multi-venue, multimedia initiative across New York City with an exhibition of contemporary arts at its centre. The catalogue provides a unique forum for engagement with the rich tapestry of Asian cultures that make up a significant, yet historically under-explored and underrepresented demographic within New York City.
Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe is Vice President for Global Artistic Programs at Asia Society, Director of Asia Society Museum in New York, and Artistic Director and Cocurator of the Asia Society Triennial. She is responsible for the museum's exhibitions program and its permanent collection, including the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection of traditional Asian art and a collection of contemporary artwork by leading and emerging Asian and Asian American artists.
Boon Hui Tan served as Vice President for Global Artistic Programs at Asia Society and Director of Asia Society Museum from 2015 to 2020. He is the founding Artistic Director and Cocurator for the Asia Society Triennial.
Alexandra Chang, writer, curator and arts scholar, is Associate Professor of Practice at Rutgers University-Newark's Department of Arts, Culture and Media and Clement A. Price Institute for Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience.
