In the summer of 1976, just months after the infamous Soweto Uprising in Johannesburg, Kentridge created images of the well-to-do of South Africa's Jewish community enjoying the summer sun on the "whites-only" Muizenberg beach in Cape Town. These are the proverbial frogs in the pot, seemingly oblivious to the devastating effects of the apartheid system. The book includes all twelve plates in the Muizenberg series as well as a revelatory sketchbook from Kentridge's archive, documenting his preparatory drawings for the prints. Each final plate state is accompanied by commentary from Kentridge, who shares his working methods as well as personal memories of the prints' subjects and creation. Also included is an interview between Kentridge and longtime friend Timothy James, exploring the making of these prints which shaped many later works.
Muizenberg features five cover variations, each with a different tipped-in image from the series. Orders will be selected at random.

William Kentridge, born in Johannesburg in 1955, is one of South Africa's most important contemporary artists. He works with and between the media of painting, writing, film, performance, and music, as well as with collaborative formats, to create an art that relates to politics, science, literature, and history, while leaving room for contradictions and uncertainty. Kentridge's work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, theaters and opera houses worldwide since the 1990s and is also owned by many major museums. He holds honorary doctorates from several universities, including Yale and the University of London. He has been awarded the Kyoto Prize (2010), the Princess of Asturias Prize (2017) and the Praemium Imperiale (2019), among others. Steidl has published Domestic Scenes (2022), Prints and Posters, Catalogue Raisonné Vol. 1 (2022) and Carlton Centre Games Acarde (2025).
